I am looking to organise some sort of WAB campaign starting latter in the year / maybe early next depending on circumstances.
So if anybody is interested in playing in such a campaign. or thinks they might be, could you let me know the following
1) what armies you have for WAB, their approximate size and which book/army-list they are based on (e.g. Norse [Shieldwall] - 2000pts, Saxon [Age of Arthur]-1500pts, etc)
2) whether you would prefer a totally in-period campaign or are happy to play out-of-period games
3) If you have several armies from different eras, or want the excuse the collect a new army, what era(s) you would prefer (Dark Ages, Biblical etc)
I have several ideas but need to know what people are looking for in a campaign.
At the moment I'm probably going to go with some form of map-based campaign using areas/regions depending on the armies involved this may be an historical map like Britannia or Civilization, or a generic/abstract "area" system. Having run both types successfully before I have a few ideas I think will be fun - possibly even "supply" to make life interesting

i have greeks, crusaders, muslim/arabs and am also 3/4 of the way through a norman army so any of these really
no too fussed about it being totally within period as long as things are balanced

Forme it would be an in period/book campaign.
I would vote for Shieldwall, as it covers a good range of armies in dark age britain.
Issue going out of book is for example in Age of Arthur you need to have allarmies using the special rules, out of book they are not particularly comparable or meaningful but in book they are the same for all.
I can put a saxon or norman / french / breton army together in addition to warband type for welsh or picts etc.

As you know I have only classical armies Persians, Macedonians, Greeks, Rep Romans and Samnites at my disposal.
I don't have any dark ages armies although I really don't want to fork out on a new army and paint it as I have already a bucket load to do. However if you introduce African native armies I think I have enough zulus to do a proxy native army or pass them off as Nubians.

Another question for the a campaign - would people interested prefer an Historical map, a made-up map, or a more abstract map-free campaign?
Not decided which way to go yet , but I'm interested in other peoples choices

I'd play but only have Imperial Romans at around 2000 points - Saxons tempt me but no way I could put an army together in time due to painting and funds.

Oh er ... just checked out gripping beast for £98.00 one can have 4 leaders, 20 Ceorls, 20 huscarls all in metal and 132 thegns in plastic - all with full command. Nice but what sort of army does that make? points? and would they want anything else i.e. skirmishes or cavalry?
Oh a map please - real places f possible but dont mind if hexed or abstracted.

Will have to check the Shieldwall book, but from memory that's a lot of thegns.
Might get away with it for Wessex, but my gut reation is you need more ceorls and maybe some Geburs for skimishing. You might be able to use the Thegns for Ceorls but I have a feeling that Ceorls are unarmoured.
If you want mounted Thegns - you could use the conquest minatures plastic Normans and fit them with round shields (or use the kite shields and simply say that they are 1050 onwards when saxon armies started using both types of shields)

Ok so 132 Thegns is about 1800 point army with characters and very dull. So just one box is on my purchase list which with Characters gives me two units of 21 and a general and BSB which is 783 points for £20. Add to that a unit of 32 Ceorls at 207 points for £15 from wargames factory and you get a near 1000 point army for £35. If you used the axe armed models from the thegns box as Huscarls would be nearer 1100 points! Nice.
Personally not that keen on the wargames factory models so will most probably buy the gripping beast plastic box at £18.00 from wayland and the gripping beast starter saxon army (20 metal huscarls and 20 metal ceorls plus 4 charcaters) for £45.00. Which is a 4 unit 1500 point army. Ideally I would take out some of the thegns and ceorls to convert into 10 gebur and 10 cavalry for a more rounded army failing that renegade do 8 saxon cav for £17).
Anyway you could make a 1000 point army for less than £35.00 or a decent 1500 point army of metal and plasti figures for a max spend of £70.00.
Is this the cheapest army out there?
Hands off if it is as I plan to buy it over the next few months!

similar cost to my greek army for which i got 2000pts for about £73 in the end inc cav.
cracking deal there mate, i'd go for it if i were you.
i am also doing saxons/normans which i hope to use in this and i got 2 x 24 man units of metals for £40 plus a unit of the palstic norman knights to use in this army and with another box that would give me 3 units of 8. i will also use my 'peasants' from my crusader army in there as well and will have another 2000pt army for about £80(ish)

Saxon thegns units built - 2 units of 21 with full command plus an Ealdorman conversion to lead them. Not bad for £11.50. Now my next task will be to convert some riders of Rohan into a small unit of saxon cavalry...

I'm looking at doing Normans or Bretons - as my Mum was born in Normandy and all my family on that side are Norman French. Strangely though my brother was born in Brittany and my Parisian cousin is married to a Breton. I lived there for 18 months as a toddler. Started off so far with a unit of dismounted knights - that's it.

Very pleased with my riders of Rohan saxon conversions - I now have 8 mounted thegsns to act as outriders for my army. I think I have 1000 points now for an outlay of 11.50 plus bits from my wargames cupboard! I have 2 units of 21 Thegns a unit of 8 mounted plus a gen and bsb. I have also added in 8 warlord celt slingers as geburs.
