So what type of Saxon army are you going to have then James - East Anglian? Wessex? Northumberland? Home Counties? Julie may be thinking of doing Mercian Saxons.

Mine will be good old Wessex hence plenty of thegns and probably some huscarls and Harold Godwinson to be added in the future so they can play 1066.

Yep well pleased - just selling a few bits on ebay to justify buying the fyrd boxes.

I picked up a box each of Wargames factory fyrd and Bondi on Saturday from VVV - they're planning to bring out shield transfers for them soon(ish)
If I remember I'll bring then down the club next meeting and anybody interested can have a look at them - not sure on the horned helmets but some of the other bits are OK
Saxons have a mix of round and kite shields so could be good for Normans too.
Anybody looking for cheapish Normans could do worse than get these and or the Gripping Beast plastics (Saxons) and simply buy metal kite shields from another supplier - the same as I did for my Peltast with their Peltae or wait to see when the Conquest games Norman Foot comes out

I was much more impressed with the fyrd box when I saw it had plenty of hemets and not just floppy hat heads!
I also liked the bodies of the viking huscarls box but sadly the heads wont do for saxons but if anybody ever ends up with a spare sprue I'll buy!

yeah - good selection of heads, the fact that I also have spare unhelmeted heads from my Numidian boxes also allows fora few more options

I have quite a few of those floppy hat heads in my Dacian box. Seems as if the fashion really kept on through the ages or perhaps the Saxons went for a retro-style! My only concern with building the Norman army is finding proper models for the Pueri. I don't think I can get away with Thessalian Cavalry for them or Companion cavalry. I can't seem to find any miniature firms that do them - apart from the real expensive ones (Foundry) and I'm not flushed enough to go down that road . However I may consider James' Riders of Rohan idea which is one that I had previously mentioned to Simon many moons ago. Ebay usually flog them for a few quid although I'm worried about size. How do they compare for model size with the rest of the Saxon army James?

Those hats are all the rage - I guess its am easy hat to make and keeps your head warm and dry.
The Pueri - Gripping Beast do some, as do Essex (code NK4), also try looking at irregular miniatures.
Each box of Conquest Norman Knights include 5 models ( 3 unarmored, 2 in leather padding / jerkin) which would be suitable. If you can find e few people to buy enough boxes and swap buts with you could get a unit of these quite cheaply - though you might also have to buy extra horse sprues from conquest too (1 sprue of 3 horses per box of knights). Since the conquest stuff comes with both Kite and Round shields these would be good Mounted Thanes etc
Between Gripping Beast, Wargames Factory and Conquest you could probably do most armies in shieldwall in plastic - though for welsh bare-legged peasants you might have to use the Numidians ;D

Warren - I found the riders look fine size wise providing you swap the heads as the horses lookthe right size and the riders are look bigger due to their cloaks. Biggest issues are some have armoured thighs, armour is scale not mail and horses heads have a small armoured patch. Personally none of these things bugged me as what saxon cav looked like is unknown and just want to get an army together for Simons campaign. Will bring them down to the club when we are allowed back in - wont be next week though as am on holiday.
Speaking of which will the league be a Jan start now due to the 40k league? (I will need the paiting time persoanlly!).

Interesting James. I was considering them for the Peuri and it seems as if they would fit the bill. Just annoyed that three years ago I sold all my Lotr models including 65 Rohan Riders which I used for the reenacting of the Ride of the Rohan against the Orc horde - that was impressive! It was at a time when Lotr waned in its populaity and I got a miserable fraction of their worth on Ebay. Just those 65 riders now would fetch me what I received for basically the whole good army back then. Fickle! I blame the new Hobbit film which is rekindling people's love of the films, which are brilliant!
I too would prefer a January start as I won't be playing the 40K SFS tournament, so it gives me something at least to look at and like you say - I need time to paint this.
