I was thinking on the lines of the arid one and the sand one. Sticking the arid nearer to the river side gives a good graduated impression. They are quite close in colour and with that many troops on the table i don't think anyone will notice.

could do i suppose.
if we go for big tables this year then we will either have to buy more mats, or use some boards.
if we decide not to buy more mats, and people dont want to cart boards about then ALL games will have to be one mat only, i.e. 6 x 4
personally, i think we could order some of the hotzmats instead of the terrain mat ones as they are made from felt and do not use sand / paint stuck on

I am lending Simon the sand boards I have in lieu of me having the roll mats as he requires the beach / sea section.

I'm looking at the possibility of doing a viking skirmish game.
The idea (so far) is to use Warrens Thermopylae boards (sea, beach, cliffs etc), put a viking longboat on it as a feature and have 20 odd vikings fight 20 odd saxons on the beach.
Rules / details to be sorted out and if I find that it's not fast paced enough I may abandon the idea altogether.
I'll probably run a test game donw the club in about 4-6 weeks time (once I have written the rules) and go from there. I may also have a follow-on or alternative scenario.

What rules - saga or lord of the rings variant are good. It may be instead of running a game i support you on this one if you need a hand?

Why dont we have a go at making our own mats, what about visiting a carpet shop and buying an off roll oddment that we can play with? Short pile green - roll up in a tube - bit of paint and stuff to give it flavour?

Not SAGA , will probably mix and match ideas from various sources and then simplify. When I have a 1st draft set I'll send you a copy Paul. Will probably start with either WAB as a base or a free set from one of the wargames mags (years old now) I'm still thinking about it

As for making our own mats - off cuts of vinyl might work too - paint/flock as required

i have an 8ft x 6ft piece of green vinyl that could be utilised.
we also need to start finalising what games we are doing and so far the only definates are as far as i read it,
the WW2 game
Warrens ancients game
so, could we start to get some definates from others please so we can both plan for these and also advertise what we are doing

Vinyl sounds ok but definately not any carpet. They used some of this down at the Milton Keynes Massacre and it caught the bottoms of the movement trays (well mine anyway) and caused upteen model fall overs. We have enough roll mats and boards anyway - so don't see the fuss.
However if anybody has a small off cut of vinyl to make a beach / sea shoreline for the Argonauts game that would be a massive favour! I'm looking for a strip about 3ft by 4 inches.

My Viking age skirmish is still under development - I need to play test my rules and see how it works.
I'll let you know as soon as I have more information
