Hi FOW'ers (Roddy, Alex, Andy, Carl, Kieron, Steve et al...),
after seeing the big FOW game on Saturday and how great it looked, Sunday I dusted off my 2.5k German Grenadier Kompanie in an attempt to get back into it and start painting - have now got a 1500 list based on the 78 SturmDivision from the Hammer & Sickle book.
Just a quick one really - what putty or material do you all use to base your figures, and in what order (eg putty then figures or vice versa)? I know Osbournes used to (still?) sell some modelling putty etc, but what is the general consensus?
I only ask as pretty much my army is based and black already, but seeing some of the Armies and nice-touches Saturday, I am going to rebase and add bits to my Arty PHQ, Combat squad PHQ's and CHQ's to spruce them up (am ordering some new HQ blisters an Kerr and King bits today). Also in the future I plan to add some 'act-acts' and 150mm's also...
Thanks all - hopefully see you soon,
Matt

Where as I'm just using pollyfilla rather than anything modelling specific.
Personally I put the putty on the base first, then insert the miniatures into it. Doing it the other way around, sticking the miniatures to the base and then trying to fill the base in with putty strikes me a way to fiddly.

I tried the putty method, and found it too fiddily. So now i just use a good amount of sand/flock to finish the bases. Looks okay.

Thanks guys appreciate your posts.
Also - where do you generally get your bits for the bases from? Things like lampposts / lights, crates, walls / broken walls, drums, trenches / wooden logs etc?

Yes Stephen it is fiddley but I stick them on them put polyfilla in between with a little PVA added to it. Sometimes use the epxoy "milliput" for tree trunks, logs and sandbags etc. But I wouldn't count me as any kind of authority as I've only been in the hobby for less than 2 years Andy

i used ready mixed filler from Wilkinsons which was about 3 quid for a quite large tub and i have done my whole boxed Lehr army plus extras i have added and still have over half left.
as Steve said you simply spread it on the base and stick the infantry in and they tend to stick (not had one fall off in two years), and i did the same for tanks, which i even pressed into the filler to make tank tracks first then it dried with those in and i painted them. it also meant that when i stuck the tank down with superglue it went into the ruts and helped the tank stick down better.

Must admit generally speaking I tend to stick them down, and then filler around them / filler the base etc, with a little bit of water on a modelling knife you can then cover their bases etc.
Just interested to know what method people use...

Matt I tend to stick figures to the base and then polyfilla around them. Paint and a bit of flock an lichen to break it up. I think at 15mm scale spending a bit of time on the base is worth it as it is the first thing that catches the eye. Just don't look too close at the paint job on my figures Alex
