Once the WAB is over I fancy getting into FOW. Perhaps in the new year. I would not mind trying out FOW before then if anyone fancies teaching me. I fancy playing 8th Army eventually as my Grandad was a dessert rat. The big army deal box set looks good and fantastic value however realistically I am unlikely to be able to buy something like that in one go at present. I'd also prefer to buy and paint units as I go and build up slowly - can anyone suggest some possible lists/sets I might want to buy and in what order to eventually make a modest army to game with occasionally?

hi, perhaps try the flames of war website to check out the best books which showcase the desert rats and then its a bit like warhammer as you can pick and choose from various units to make up your army.
i can bring along the fortress europe book tomorrow to give you an idea of what i'm saying if that helps

Hi James
FOW have just brought out a new Africa army book which covers the Africa and Italy theaters of the war. You should be able to get an army out of that. They basically fall into four types for Brits, Armoured Company, Motorised Inf, Infantry company and Recon Company. It will depend on your playing style as to which one will suit.
If you go to the forums on the FOW website and search for Desert Rats you should find peoples ideas for a balanced 1500pt army with comments from others with varying degrees of experience. There is also an article on the main site called something like "Making a perfect stew" which gives an interesting insight into gaming with each of the different types.
I play Poles in Normandy which are in effect late war British, if you can get someone to lend you an army I can run through the mechanics of the rules if you like.
Cheers Alex

Hi James, Happy to hear you are interested in FoW. I'd go along with all the advice so far, but would add a word of warning about which period of the war you choose. Most of the Desert Rats work in North Africa would fall into mid war and limit what you can pick and also who you could play. Most of us have late war armies with some that can be adapted to mid war. Building in the flexability to play it as either might cost a little more, but should be worth it. Even if you don't buy and paint the figures for one era until much later it is well worth considering. I also have a late war german army you are more than welcome to borrow or fight against, panzers though if that suits your style of play (p.s. The one with a bit of variety, not just panthers, before anyone says anything ;D ) Andy

Hi James
Something Alexs said is key to the choice - "It will depend on your playing style as to which one will suit."
Try before you buy is a great idea and many on here have already offered to lend you armies so well worth taking them up on that.
Also Windymillers comment is key - working our who you can play against regularly otherwise it can get frustrating. I intend to come to the club (if they let me!!) from time to time and have Brit and Jerry Mid-War & Late War forces so would be happy top play you anytime.
Cheers
Nobby
