If anybody is interested Bracknell Forest Gamers are hosting a doubles tournament using border patrol rules / armies on the 28th March 2009. You need two 500pts painted up armies. www.bfgclub.org.uk/WOM09.pdfI had a little look and there are a few things in here that would make it virtually impossible for me to play VC. 1. Characters only have a value of 125pts maximium - as I have to take a vamp at 100pts base that leaves rather nothing else for him to take. As you are only allowed one character per army it sort of rules out taking any necromancers or wight lords. 2. No magic standards are allowed, and no battle standard bearers. Suddenly my grave guard look worse and would be taken out easily by Empire swordsmen or militia. 3. Only one special or rare choice per army - looks like no grave guard after all - if I would take wraiths! ;D 4. Only one chariot or war machine allowed, but TK can have more than one as this is a special choice as they have to take a liche priest. This leaves out all the juicy specials that make a TK army. Although the LP has 165pts they can take as do Ogre tyrants. Ogres would not have any magic as a butcher could not lead the army. Anyway have a look guys - if you like it then get in contact with the guys down there. I don't think my VC army would be much cop at this - given the restrictions.

<qoute>Your army may include up to ONE unit that is either Special or Rare</quote>
That pretty much rules out a viable high elf army, since all their good combat units are specials
Also 125pts is nowhere near enough to build a useful High Elf mage I'd be stuck with a Lvl 1 with one dispel scroll - no where near good enough
As for Ogres
A bruiser comes in a 130pts, once I've added in some, pretty much required, basic kit (heavy armour, additional hand weapon, sword & luck gnoblars) it's pushing close to the 165pts they have so graciously conceded for an ogre army can spend on a general.
So no magic items or big names for my ogre general
It appears that they have added an awful lot of complicated extra rules, the only effect of which is to rule out certain armies.
Quite frankly, I'd have prefered it if they'd been honest enough to just forbid the armies they don't like.

If you have a look at the armies that were in it last year it was skaven, dwarves and ogres mostly - judging by some of the names. Two of which do not and cannot (in that order) cast magic at all. Then again everybody would be in the same boat so if you have a shooty army of death you are fine - (Skaven). If you have loads of cheap and expendable troops that should be good for you (Skaven), do not have to have a magic user as a hero but can cast lots of magic (Skaven) ... Hmmm wonder if their organiser has a Skaven army. The only army that I could possibly field under these rules would be wood elves and even here I doubt very much I could get a decent level 2 mage - just as you found out with your HE mage. However kitting myself out with banks of glade guard and lots of dryads seem inviting. Treeman would be way too expensive for this - so that would leave a nice little annoying unit of waywatchers or some wardancers.
However on reflection orcs and goblins should own this type of tournament!
