This is mainly to the committee but open to anyones comments.
last night i was informed that the committee had approved the purchase of trophies for the recently held SFS Memorial Fantasy tournament, the trophies proposed are a large shield, with smaller versions for the winner and runner up.
the winner and runner up would PERMANENTLY keep their trophies and the main trophy would be kept by a committee member? and brought to the club each week. WHY?
the reason given for this is because there is a possibility that in the future a winner of this trophy may decide not to return to the club and the main trophy would be 'lost'.
sorry, but i dont feel that this is a valid enough reason to warrant the extra money spent on other trophies etc, which we will have to do EVERY year from now on to give to the two finallists, another expense we dont need.
personally, i thought that the smaller trophy at £39 + engraving would be ok (this would last 7 years minimum) and the winner should be trusted to keep AND return it each year.
i think there is a case of mistrust here on the part of someone who wins it, especially as we have entrusted far more cash too several members currently as they have the FREE armies donated to the club for Kelmarsh and they are worth far more than the trophy (ies) we are looking to purchase. i have some of these models as do several people who played in the SFS tournie, but there has never been a question of these not being returned, so why for a trophy?
where is the logic in it being ok for people to have all the models and paint them but not trusting someone to return a trophy?
coupled with the fact that we may need to get new tables ourselves if the scouts do not purchase them , i think better use of club funds should be considered.
all other purchases that have been made recently will benefit club members, we have bought paints etc for the new armies, but once Kelmarsh is out of the way ANY club member can use them at the club, if they want to.
when i originally sorted out this trophy idea with Simon's widow, Jay, i told her that the winner of the memorial tournament would get to 'keep' the trophy for a year, and to change it at this late stage does not seem right, and to imply to her that we cannot trust his friends to return it is i think a bit of an insult to his memory, the spirit of the tournament, and to how well it has been run and played.
you may think my thoughts a tad strong on this, and i make no apologies for this. Simon was a good friend of mine and i think this has been handled incorrectly and insensitively, bearing in mind what the trophy stands for.
whilst the cash issue is a problem, the main thing for me is the 'trust' issue and think this should be reconsidered.
your thoughts are greatly welcome.
