Hi All,
My name is Michael and I was directed to this forum from someone on Facebook after I asked around for somewhere I could go to play Magic.
I've only been playing since the beginning of the year and have only been able to play against my brother whom I only get to meet up with a few times a month.
I'd say I'm fairly comfortable with the rules and format for Mtg. I only play with cards from the Origins core set for now as money is tight and my wife might kill me if I started on a new set.
I'd like to know a bit more about the club, how active Mtg is there and details about becoming a member. If anyone could help me out it be very grateful.
Thanks.

MTG is fairly active. The majority of the regular players are also the Role Playing players though, so it tends to alternate weeks. Yesterday was RP night, so next week there may be some Magic happening. However you should definitely feel free to come down and explore some other games.
In regards to you only playing from the "Origins core set". Origins is not a core set, and other sets are no more expensive than any other. You would simply have more options to use. We have a retailer who sets up a stall every week who sells Magic boosters, 3 for £10, which is a solid deal.
As we only play casual magic, we don't restrict what you can take, so you can always play whatever you happen to have available.

Hi Nick,
Thanks for that info. I was also thinking about getting into Warhammer as well, I briefly played 40k about ten years ago but was wondering what was more popular in the group Fantasy or 40k and how often do people get together to play that?

hi
40k is probably more popular than WHFB but more fantasy players are also playing the new Frostgrave fantasy game as you only need about a dozen figures
all sorts of mini , board and other games played too

Truthfully 40k is slowly falling out of favour at the club, but there are some players who are still up for games against new opponents.

Ok, cool. I had a dig around and found some of my old 40k models. I had a look on ebay and GW and can't believe how high the prices are now for models now, even second hand!
For now I think i'll go with the 40k that I have, although they need some repair and paint. Will the models I have be enough to play a game, I have the following:
Space Marines 1x 10 Man Tactical Squad 1x 5 Man Tactical Squad 1x 5 Man Scout Squad 1x 5 Man Command Squad Squad 1x 5 Man Devastator Squad 2x Bikes 1x Chaplain on Bike 1x Marneus Calgar
I'm fairly sure I have a Land Speeder and a Rhino somewhere but haven't found them yet.

unfortunately some people seem to think that a half built, half sprayed model is worth the same as a brand new, on the sprue kit. I'm still surprised at the prices I see on ebay for GW kits, then again, the amount of "Pro-painted" models on ebay at obscene prices also amazes me.
Welcome to the forum and the club.

Hi Michael, there are Warhammer Fantasy players at the club but due to the "upheavals" not many of us are currently playing regularly. The scene: basically GW did away or retracted support for 8th Edition WFB in favour of Age of Sigmar. However we still have a few people playing WFB. In fact if you are free tomorrow you can come down to the club at the Scout Hall and have a look at the 28 armies going at each other at the Rushden Rumble 2016 tournament - which may be the last 8th edition one we do for the Rumble.
This is because there is a fan based 9th Age edition that is extremely popular and has a lot of support around the tournament circuit. The rules are free to download and so are the mini army books / pdfs. However all the non-generic units have had name changes such as the Mortis Engine from the vampire counts army is now called the Altar of Undeath from the Vampire Covenant army. You can see what I mean its all about not treading on copyright toes. However I don't think GW can lay claim to such words as skeleton, zombie or ghoul so these have been used. Obviously the whole roster from 8th Ed is available but you would have to convert just the names and not your regular army models.
Quite a few of us were thinking about the Age of Sigmar for a few league matches but I just need to get the Rumble out of the way first. So if interested I'm sure a few could introduce you to the AoS rules. We actually use the Mohammer Clash of swords rules mostly but a few like to pick what they like (GW vanilla style) and have a big jam session in the middle of the park. For a number of 8th ed players this is/was extremely off putting. So as a personal preference and with a view to balanced games the Clash of Swords rules wins out for the moment.
So don't be put off with not playing fantasy because it seems that nobody is playing - pop in tomorrow for 10 - 15 minutes and have a look about - but keep in mind that we are playing 8th edition.

Hi Carl,
Thanks for letting me know. Looks like i'm going to have to give tonight a miss anyway, the Mrs is not too well. Hopefully we can sort out a game for the week after next if possible?
