Hi all, thanks for all the help at the club with my basic FOW questions. I think I've finally decided to go for a 4th Special Servie Brigade (commandos) army, but would like comments on pros/cons before i spend the cash. The army list is from the FOW site the pdf is: www.flamesofwar.com/Portals/0/Documents/RM-Commandos.pdfI think as long as I take some M10s I can take on most situations, but im sure there will be something i miss, or you guys will know. All thoughts welcome... (well most anyway).. Kieron

Looks interesting. We haven't met yet, as I was not at the club this week. Guess you saw Alex and Roddy? I've got a Panzer Lehr panzer kompanie that would love to meet your commandos ;D See you soon Andy

Fearless Veterans and a couple of nice special rules.....these guys will be tough!!
Are you planning more than one troop? As I see that you can only field one support platoon per marine platoon and you can only field up to 2 marine platoons. With only one troop that would mean you could field a max of 2 support platoons.
With a 1500 point force if you only ran one troop you can spend 710 points on your HQ, 2 marine platoons, weapons platoon & mortar platoon - that leaves you with 790 points to spend on two support platoons! - this would force you to pick the M10's and the SP artillery and still have 10 points unspent! Unless I'm missing something!
Nice looking force though with interesting support choices - Those Centaurs look interesting!
Cheers
Roddy

It does look like the selections are fairly limited. If you go for the Veteran support options you are going to end up with a very small force for 1,500 points.
I think I'd be looking at two troops myself for 1,500 point, with slightly less elite support choices. Maybe a small selection of Priests, M10's and Centaurs perhaps. The advantage there is you can try out a lot the various choices with the minimum sized platoons without having to spend a lot of money all at once.
The Priests in particular are fairly expensive as you need a lot of stuff to field the full two section battery.
The force looks fairly competative to me. The only area where you might find they struggle is going to be against seriously heavily armoured tanks. Tigers, Panthers, King Tigers and IS-2's.
The M10's can hurt Tigers and Panthers, but they don't have much chance of getting kills unless in the side armour, and they're very fragile. The Firefly is slightly better, and has better armour but you get only one.
Frankly the Priests, and the PIAT teams are actually your best option for killing really heavy tanks.
Be interesting to give you a game once you've bought your stuff.

Thanks for your thoughts.
I was in Osbournes today, and picked up a copy of Festung Europa (couldnt help myself). There's a Commando list in there, with out the restrictions on what 'beach' it comes from, but for now I'm going with the 'Sword Beach' restrictions:
SO... here's my initial army list:
1st Compy. Cmd HQ +PIAT (40) Commando Pltn. 2sqds +piat +mortar (220) Commando Pltn. 2sqds +piat +mortar (220) Weapon Pltn. Machine Guns. 3sections (125) Support Pltn. Anti-Tank. M10 (240) Total=845pts
2nd Compy Cmd HQ +PIAT (40) Commando Pltn. 2sqds +piat +mortar (220) Commando Pltn. 2sqds +piat +mortar (220) Royalarmoured support 2Centaur (180) Total= 660
Force Total 1505pts
5pts over i know, but I just cant seem to jiggle it... unless i go 10/15pts under.
Anyway, thoughts please...
Kieron

Looks good, glad you went with the Centaurs they look cool! And 4 platoons of RM commandos - hard to hit and when you do hit them they don't run away!
Cheers

Nice, gives you an option later of dropping the second platoon in the second company if you want even more flexibility. But a tough little balanced force as it stands. I hate it when the infantry keep getting back up again and won't lay down like they're supposed to Kieron are you on for next week, doubles? You with Roddy's lovely grenadiers fighting alongside my little panthers. See the post in "arrange games" Regards Windy

Hi Kieron
Good to see another bitten by the bug!
Looks a tough enough army. You may need smoke to get in about the heavier Gerry tanks.
I notice the M10's have slow traverse rule but it may just mean you need to keep enemy armour in front of you.
Cheers Alex
