The rise and fall of the Roman empire. The Die is Cast is what Caesar is reputed to have said as he crossed the Rubicon with his army and started the Great Roman Civil war. In the the earlier versions of the rules I used the latin but no one understood it so now the English version of the name.
Something weird happening on the hosting servers today, no emails and files I loaded this morning were gone.
Anyway, thanks for the heads up. Loaded both of them again and both worked fine a few minutes ago. Hope that holds.

Got the links to work this time, first glance looks good Justin, what major influences have guided you when putting these rules together??

WRG rules up to 6th, which were in the last version, combat tables and that sort of thing.
Peter Gilders Napoleonic rules, In the Grand Manner which is the origin of the morale system for the light troops and the system for cavalry vs infantry and cavalry vs cavalry combat.
And of course 41 years of playing ancients and seeing a lot of other rules sets. The first version of my rules came out in 1992 and I can remember putting the first sets together on a warm summers day on a grassy knoll outside of a wargames show in Leeds, so that the traders could sell copies.
The only real change compared to the previous version is using D12's to cause hits. The other thing has been to go through the rules and replace abbreviations with full names. Back in the day ancient gamers would know what you meant by HC (heavy cavalry) but those references have fallen in to disuse and perhaps been replaced by other things. I know how much some of the articles in Slingshot (Society of Ancients magazine) annoy me with almost algebraic references to troop types like Ax(X). Its OK if you understand what they are on about but otherwise gibberish. The only real problem has been super heavy cavalry, that might be replaced with cataphracts if people think it is a better term?
Anyway I don't want to tell you too much to start with as you are my blind test group. You have never seen the rules before (I think) so if you have any problems or the rules do not seem clear, let me know and I will amend them in light of your observations. Its the sort of experience of someone who buys the rules and then has to make sense of them without anyone to show them how to play.
And what army lists would you like to start off with? I have a format for them, so its just a question of putting in the numbers.

Thanks Justin.
I have to say when i asked the question re influences, I nearly said the rules felt they had A WRG 6th Edition flavour.
As I said previously my replies will be slow coming as I am moving house late July so going through a packing period. The payback being a double gaage to wargame in, so short term distruption for long term gain.
cheers
Paul

Yes I think WRG 6th was the last simultaneous move system ancients game system I played. These days IGo UGo rules the roost, perhaps I can buck the trend.
There are obvious problems with IGo UGo, the most obvious that I can do unto you before you do back to me. This is doubly compounded by the new War and Conquest rules where you can have IGo UGo, UGo IGo! Two moves back to back.
I am trying to get Clash of Empires to have simultaneous combat as the default method of fighting. Otherwise you can have the situation where one side slaughters the enemy and there are none of the enemy to fight back. Plainly ridiculous. Clash of Empires could be made (modified) into a good set but I doubt that they will change it and of course not really in my interests to make it better.

I really would like to have a pop at this as at least I don't have to buy more figures or rebase anything. This is my pet hate when being introduced to a new system; the temptation to buy even more models for another system just to play it and then divvying up what pennies I have left every month a deciding what systme I should buy for. Most months its not very much anymore! So have one for me this Tuesday if you could please Paul.

Just added 2 versions of Carthaginians (1st and 2nd Punic war).
Changed the format of the lists, by taking out sidearm. Since everyone who does not have a specific HtH weapon has a sidearm, I don't think there is any point mentioning them.
Next up Early Romans (I wonder if anyone will ever play these), Early Byzantine and Goths.
My mate John has begged to do the Sassanid list but so far he has taken 2 weeks and no info on whats happening. It takes me about 2 hours to do a decent list (a short one like the Gallic army half an hour). So I am expecting some sort of mega project for the Sassanids, which I will then ruthlessly prune.
Just to mention, armies that an army can ally with will be included in later versions of the lists but there have to be the lists to cross-reference with to make that happen.
