Hi guys need some advice and i know you lot play more WAB than ours club so thought id start here. Getting more into WAB but only have Vikings although they are doing quite well, think i need to set up a bit. So really like the idea of Japanese army bit different to the norm, and can cover a large period of timescale. So any advice where to start what models etc this will be a complete new build army etc and can keep you guys posted how im getting on,and maybe even get down your club for some play testing. Cheers

Perry miniatures have a lovely range - have a very historically accurate feel in terms of design and look. West wind also have a great range of metal Samurai and do boxes of 10 horse or 20 men £19.99. They also sell 2 or 4 for £5.00 if you want to vary regiment sizes and they have a figure head system for plenty of variety.
Not sure about the best period or date from a WAB point of view - I would suggest seeing if the new Armies of Antiquities list has a good Japanese list to follow and probably the earlier the better from the point of view of gaming as most people have Ancient Armies such as Romans or Greeks or Dark Age forces. There is very little WAB gaming in the mid to late medieval period it seems to me as black powder weapons and various books like Armies of Chivalry start to complicate things.
Hope this helps - Paul/Simon can you advise on a list from the new book? (I dont have it yet).

Japanese armies (Samurai) used to be the bane of tournaments as some build from the Art of War and even the old AoA book were quite powerful especially with the extended range of their bows. The first year we had the Axes and Axis 2 Samurai armies basically wiped the floor with most until they both had to face each other in the final round on table one. I can't comment on the new book but I hope they haven't made them as difficult to play against.
Your other problem (if you think it may be) is finding an opponent who has an army that is part of the same era and geographically plausible. A lot of us play out of era at times but nothing is more satisfying than playing within a certain time frame. We had one chap that played Han Chinese in a campaign we did a few years back but this is about as close to a match up that you would get at this club. You never know there may be just one person who is thinking along the lines of doing one. However I have not heard anything along those lines. Last year we had an Indian Army and a few Persian armies. Again the likelihood of them meeting would have been slim - but knows?

I sell the Wargames Factory figures, 25 figures to a box £14.50 a box. www.3vwargames.co.uk/wf_page.htm#samuraiNow includes; foot Samurai (spear or sword armed), ashigaru armed with missiles (bows or guns) and ashigaru with spears. Other suppliers; Kingsford Miniatures, the Assault Group and of course Perrys. Compared with the old Samurai list the following has gone in the new list; re-rolls, extra save for using Samurai sword, 2 attacks each and the general being a super-hero. In an early list basically you have; elite horse archers (no halberds) perhaps with heavy armour, supported by foot bows (no monks, spearmen or samurai on foot).

Describe the troop types you like to play with.
A very interesting army is Lydian the first in the list, greek with chariots, fought persia which I am collecting and Warren has, also could fight greek types easily.
Syracusan, Alexandrian, could be a bactrian army part pike part Indian longbow. Loads to choose from
Dark ages, could be Breton a variant of Norman, Irish, Italio Norman with arabs.
there are many lists to go for and many with something different.

Goths/Vandals?
Mix of good and bad (poor?) troops.
I am afraid that the extremes of earlier supplements have gone in the new AoA but you could always use the earlier lists if you prefer using lots of special rules.

If you are interested in entering the Axes 2012 WAB 2 tournament this year - think on the lines of having an army in and around the dark ages. Simon has centred it around the vikings for a time period.

Axes 2012 will be 1st September at the Scout Hut in Rushden.
The competition will be using 2100pts from the new Armies of Antiquity book. The exact lists we'll be using are still to be finalised but if you can hold on a few weeks I'll have a better idea of what we're allowing and if there's anything that's available in the 800-1050 AD range you fancy I should be able to confirm it's availability then
