I've just seen the Assault on Black Reach. I'm quite tempted to start a space marine army. If I did buy this and someone else bought another box would you want to swap the space marines for the orks? Just a thought?

The Assault on Black Reach box is good value for both armies.
You get: A Captain: 60pts + Wargear (£10) 10 Tactical Marines: 150 - 180pts (depending on weapons choices) (£18) 5 Terminators: 200 - 220 pts (depending on weapons choices) (£25) 1 Dreadnought: 105+ pts (£25)
That's around 600 points with a few weapon upgrades and a bit of wargear on the captain.
The Orks are as follows: 1 Warboss: 60 pts + wargear (£10) 5 Nobz: 100 - 160 (depending on weapons choices) (£18 for the metal ones) 20 Ork Boyz: 120 - 150 (depending on weapons choices) (£24) 3 Deff Copters: 105 - 225 (depending on weapons choices) (£12 each for the metal ones)
The Orks have between 500 and 600 points, rather depending on exactly what weapon fits you get in the box. Although to match the space marines points the Orks will need to be more heavily upgraded.
I'd personally say the Marines are the better force in the box, in a straight fight I'd expect them to have an edge over the Orks, they ought to have better firepower, and the Terminators and the Dreadnought should in theory stomp most of the Ork units in close combat.

From what I've seen in pictures on Warseer and Bell of Lost Souls you don't get all the weapon alternatives you would if you bought the normal box sets.
For example the Orc Boyz come with choppas and sluggas and one with a big shoota (twice over for two units worth). The Nobz also have choppas & sluggas and the Warboss has a twin linked shoota and a power klaw. The DeffKoptas appear to have rocket launchers on them.
Not too sure about the SM as I'm not as up on their weapons.
I also understand that the two forces are deliberatley uneven - something to do with the Black Reach scenario itself.

Ooops! Also meant to say it does seem to be excelent value for money at £40 as you get everything Steve mentioned plus templates, dice & a couple of measuring sticks (which are ok if you're just starting I guess).
So you see GW can do it when they want to!!!

this certainly looks to be a good deal from GW and i have asked Jon if he would be willing to swap the SM's in his box for the Orks in mine should i buy one, so i too may start a SM force. would just get 1500 pts as a try out and see how it went.

Two boxes worth of the marines would almost get you there in terms of a pretty good space marine force.
I think the only thing I'd be looking to add to that would probably be another unit of basic space marines, as the scenario's under the new version of the rules is much more heavily focused on the troops than before, and possibly only two units of tactical marines might not be enough in 1,500 points.
I'm not 100% sure about that however, as I've yet to play any of the new scenarios.

Sounds like everyone wants the Marines and nobody wants the Orks!
I'm not sure I'm going to buy a Blackreach box myself, I have both Marines and Orks already, and in pretty sizable numbers too. The only things in the box I really want are the Ork Dethkopters and the Marine Dreadnaught.

Fair do's!
Those dethkopters captured my imagination a year or so ago. Weren't they Necromunda models or something before?

Gorka-Morka, which was basically Necromunder but with Orks and Vehicles rather than gangers and buildings.
