Ok a good month or so of chatting to various people at tournaments and at the club as well as others on forums.
We have about 75% of people who think its a great idea, 10% who are not bothered and just want a good game, and 15% who just hate the idea.
After some thought a small change is needed and this idea seems the best as drafted from many comments.
Basically it will be an open list with all lists posted on the forum (s) a week before. You turn up with your 1000pts stand alone army and it allies with another stand alone army (the partner you bring) for the first round. However you will not ally with them in the second or third round. Your partners for these will be drawn before the tournament and posted up after the lists have gone up. This way the awkwardness of the Swiss rules goes out of the window for this particular tournament. There is no top table although all tables will be numbered and you will know exactly which table number to go to for all rounds - even before the tournament.
You will have partners you know or may not know. Here at least we can change perhaps a 2nd or 3rd partnership if you really have a dislike to this particular person which we hope will probably not happen as it is after all a fun tournament. This would prove a bit of a headache on the day if in the remotest chance it happened. If you are in this to WAAC then you will have to ensure that you work with each partner or be disappointed. Although I have to stress its not a WAAC tourney.
The aim is to find the best stand alone army that will work well with all partnerships. The two top players will be pronounced the doubles winners and they may not have even played each other or played with each other. Their scores will doing the shouting for them.
Scores for each individual will be the result from each doubles battle. You will both get the same scores, even if your army gets totalled and your partner somehow wins the day with what he/she has left.
More to come when Stephen sorts his eternal computer laptop problems and gets the rulespack out.
In a few weeks I will be starting a pledge list so hopefully we should see people signing up then.
