hardback, but at £22.50 for an army book this seems a bit much

Yes indeed steep is more the word - but still a hard back book that won't hopefully fall away at the spines. There are some good things in it - but unfortunately there are a number of really poo-poo ones. Only 8 magic items to choose from of which most are expensive points wise and leaves the bearer with not much defense. Some are so costly that only lords can have them. No more banner of "how many dispel dice?" or the +1 attack on the charge banner, and sneaky stealing has apparently gone. However the Mangler squigs sound fun as do the skulkers. Waiting to see what the huge spider is like in the flesh!

The giant spiders picture is up on advance orders or do you mean how it plays??? I agree its steep but having just bought a flames army supplement at £30+ feel for once the precedent was set elsewhere!

I know I'm expected to say it, but after playing with the army a few times and thinking about why things have been done the way they are, I'm really impressed by it.
This book is more about the army and less about the kit - which is, I've a feeling anyway (because we were told the hardback sets a precedent for the rest of the fantasy books), how the other army books will be. No more will you have item combos breaking the game, but instead it'll be about your tactical ability upon the battlefield. Monsters, Hordes of models, cavalry pushes at the right time, everything is going more towards interactive game play.
Sneaky stealing is now a lore attribute for goblins (and their magic is bad ass!) whilst Orc magic is far more short ranged and aggressive, if a touch unreliable (mainly due to ranges).
On the price thing? I don't see Warhammer getting redone for 5-6 years now, not with the Hobbit license secured so some focus being no doubt turned to War of the Ring, so you'll get a book that's designed and built around a system that's going to 'stay'. Plus I like full colour hardbacks (like Priv. Presses stuff - all their books I own and their all hardback).
In terms of the model? The spider is awesome. Truely. But I utterly hate spiders, and it makes my skin crawl - it looks that good! And it plays pretty mean with a Great Shaman on top. It's a good Anchor point for you army, to slam in the middle of the army for magic, or on the sides with a flinger for rushing the enemy flanks). It's most defo. a character/monster kill though, and not an Infantry killer.
On a side note: Warran, will the new OnG book be allowed in the Rumble?

the only diff with flames supplememnts is there are normally several army listngs for various forces in them rather than just one army, but that is i suppose partly down to the fact that each book is army specific rather than era / period specific as with flames or wab supplements.

You're showing your ages on the price thing. I can remember buying the three core AD&D books (Players Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide and Monster Manual) for just under £30 - now look at how much they cost!

@ Shamutanti - I've exercised a little moderation on your message to use a little less explitive, we do have under 5s on this site but enough about me To answer your question the New O and G book will be used at the Rushden Rumble. It will be just after a month of the release so its fair game. As for the spider - lizardmen watch out thewildones.faketrix.com/picture-156-giant-spider-in-back-yard-eating-lizard.htm

Got a good long look Northampton. First impressions are v v good. I like the lay out and full colour pictures. The rules are cool too, some nice new characters and units, as you say Warren, Mangler squigs and Skulkers are cool (will have to get some...)
As for the price, well as the paper back books are now £17.50, £22.50 for this hardback isn't so bad and it does kind of feel like value for money in terms of content, length etc...

In my hands now and I'm a little non-plussed by it. Some great things - some underpowering things but let's see what happens when I start playing it.
