As I have not got the book as yet - can Daemons take common magic items such as enchanted shield etc...?
I think no - but I'm sure Darrell or Liam could tell me otherwise.

Daemons have no access to any magic items at all, including the common magic item list.
Their purchasable abilities are called Daemonic Gifts and their purchasable banner-like abilities are called Daemonic Icons. Neither Gifts nor Icons are affected by abilities, magic items, or spells that specifically affect magic items.

Sure, that's what they all say. This weighty tome of arcane knowledge is the first step towards dāmnation... ;-)

This weighty tome of arcane knowledge is the first step towards dāmnation... ;-) Do you really think the lord of the dead would succumbed to the delights of Slaneesh or the 20+ power dice of Tzeentch? Tempting but it would hurt in the pocket to but a new army at present - I have a new army waiting to be painted - I guess I must have about 3-4,000pts worth easy of it! Which army - hmmmm? just wait 'n' see next year!

Warhammer Armies: Daemons of Chaos, page 29, Daemonic Incursions:
2253 IC: Somewhere in the depths of the Mountains of Mourn, the Vampire Mangari the Old unearths a gemstone crown allowing him to commune with the Great God Tzeentch. The Vampire strikes a pact with the Great Sorceror. For the next century combined armies of Daemons and the Undead assail Ogre and Chaos Dwarf strongholds.
Vampires succumbing to the powers of Chaos? It's happened before... ;D

...strike a pact but not succumbed... I would think it would be in the lordship's bad interest to go down this route. I think his lordship of the undead denizens will wait for the victor of the trophy and show who truly casts shadows over the battlefield!
