Well judging by the chitter chatter across the Net it seems that Warhammer Fantasy is keeping its promise that with every Football World Cup they will bring out a new edition (2006, 2010, and now 2014). Not too sure what to make of this but it will mean relearning complex rules that I have just managed to get to grips with. Granted that the horde style play we have now in the 8th Ed has given me a headache for painting and not to mention the extra cost to bulk out. I seem to be ok now with having most of what I want model wise - however this is the challenge that GW faces. How do they get me to part with my well earned money? Change the rules, add new units in, make some playing accessory gizmo a "must have" to play. I'm not the best aficionado for rambling about WFB rules etc... I quite like the rules as they are in 8th ed. It is a bit random with super spells that can wipe out half an army in one magic phase - this is the only thing that bugs me. Anyway here is a link to a thread I found interesting to read ... pins of war chitter chatter

so why not start a thread here to see if the mass opinion at the club is to stick with 8th and thereby you all save a heap of cash. if you dont go to GW events then this wont be an issue although it may affect the Rumble if you do this.
will it not be a wiser move to buy the starter when it appears for the small book and then ebay the models to get some money back

As we go to quite a few tournaments I think its best to go 9th when or if it comes out. As for the Rushden Rumble it will be played with whatever rules are current, just like a Bolt Action tournament would. I do agree about buying the box set although rumours have it that there is only a shortened rules version. Now I am not too sure what they mean by "shortened".

Be interesting to see if they do release 9th edition this year as they've just done 40k 7th edition, which breaks the 4 year cycle...

Maybe the GW juggernaut is struggling to meet its profit margins. With the release of games like Bolt action etc possibly taking a toll. Hence the more new editions released makes for a high revenue injection when needed..

I thought 40k 7th edition was just a recompile of the book with all the current errata? is it actually going to be a hole new ball game? If that's the case you may have to worry about Warhammer 10th edition next year!

It's looking like the new 40k rules are a complete re-do. There are new missions, an alternative force organisation chart and Psychic powers get their own phase. Quite how much the basic game mechanics have change I don't know, but apparently vehicles are more resilient, for one thing. Not sure the "end is nigh" for GW just yet. They still produce amazing miniatures and people are willing to buy them purely because of that. Their pricing/marketing strategy maybe a thing of profound mystery, but they are still a major player and probably will be for a long time to come. This argument will, obviously, continue to crop up on every forum/message board going every time GW do another rules re-boot or new release. I suppose people will vote with their wallets one way or another, whether out of choice or because they can no longer afford it... On a related note I bought a Mantic Spearman Regiment to use with my Wood Elves as Eternal Guard. I have to say they look alright. You don't get the multi-pose option and they're not in the same "style" as my old metal GW models, but as I picked them up for £9.99 for 20 models (from E-bay) I think I can live with that

very good minis still but way too pricey for most folk now, which is why Mantic are doing so well.
if GW came out and said 'right that's it' we are keeping what we have for min five years it would give stability to their customers and keep them happy...

As someone has raised the point about 40k 7th ed. reading between the lines from White Dwarf and the web casts, it looks more like a tidy up, as some touched on earlier. Obviously the big thing is the FoC, I personally don't think Unbound is so bad (but I'll probable end up eating my dice now I have said it), so long as people don't abuse it (like that has never happened before!!) and get the opponents consent. The psychics phase is just a place to put it and make it easier to remember when you can do these things, and I assume to bring it into line with fantasy (maybe one of you can confirm this or not). The vehicle resilience is just to make it a bit harder to one shot a vehicle, you know need 7+ to instantly destroy it. I don't know what you fantasy boys are moaning about anyway 40k 6ed only lasted 2 years!! and thats c"""". Carl has raised an interesting point, for SFS are we sticking to 6th ed (possible the wrong place to ask this!)
