17th September 1944, 8am Arnhem…Parachutes are seen falling from the skies to the west of Wolfheze and Oosterbeek south of the river Rhine there were more falling on Driel. Much further South three separate drops of parachutists could be seen landing around the town of Nijmagen.
Dutch resistance intelligence sources have the drops at Brigade or Regiment size meaning that up to 6 Regiments of allied paratroopers are now behind the German lines liberating areas around Arnhem & Nijmagen!
Other than the initial drops all seems eerily quiet around the Arnhem area with paratroopers moving quietly towards Arnhem town its self. As of 6pm it is thought that the British are in control of Wolheze, the landing zone directly to the west, Oosterbeek, the landing zone directly to the west and Driel. German activity seems quiet around Arnhem – do they even know that the Allies have landed?? It seems that German have moved to secure Deelen Airfield. But the Panzers that we know are refitting in Arnhem town have yet to fire up their engines.
Our sources around Arnhem Bridge tell us that the peace may about to be shattered…. Paratroops have been spotted at 9pm quietly taking up positions ready for a direct assault on the Bridge…….
17th September 1944, 10am Eindhoven….. All hell has been let loose….American Paratroops that seemed to land to the north have launched a bold assault directly into the town of Eindhoven itself – they have no support form any other allied ground troops….after much bloody fighting the Americans are forced to retreat from their assault into a rather precarious pocket in Nuenen. Whilst this assault was raging, the full force of XXX corps fired up their engines and assaulted into the Valkenswaard Road. Awaiting the Shermans and Sextons were Kurt Student’s 6th Fallschirmjager Division – XXX Corps were desperately trying to reach their American allies at Eindhoven, however, the Fallschirmjagers put up a stoic defence and stopped XXX in its tracks. Directly to the East on Weert Road VIII Corps suffered the same fate against Division Erdman’s Fallshirmjagers.
Meanwhile to the East the Allies did have some success with XII Corps pushing elements of the 1st Fallshirmarmee out of Turnhout Bridge. The allies had captured their first bridge intact…surely it will be all about the bridges if the brave British Paratroops at Arnhem are to be reached in time?
17th September 1944, 3pm……To the East of Son Bridge…Disaster for the Allies… Completely surrounded 506 PIR of the 101st Us Airborne is completely wiped out by German Grenadiers. To the South things are not getting much better for the Allies – another Assault from Joes Bridge is stopped dead in its tracks and the Fallshirmjagers on Weert Road hold their ground again.
17th September 1944, 8pm…. Six major battles have taken place during the day and the allies have only managed a victory with XII Corps at Turnhout Bridge. Our intelligence assets tell us that the Allies have three more major assaults planned for early in the morning of 18th September :
1. An all out assault into Arnhem Bridge by the 1st Para Brigade
2. The already victorious XII Corps have pushed through Bereyk and are poised to assault Eindhoven.
3. VIII Corps are ready to assault the battered German Paratroopers on Weert Road again!
If successful the whole complexion of this campaign will turn on it’s head and give the Allies a major boost in morale and initiative!
Current scores after turn 1 :
Germans hold 320 points of Objectives and gained 10 points for the destruction of 506 PIR. Total : 330 Points
Allies gained 6 points for the capture of Turnhout Bridge. Total : 6 points
This can all change by the end of 18th September as Eindhoven is worth 10 points and Arnhem Bridge a massive 60 points!
This was a very brief summary of the events in the opening turn of our Market Garden Campaign which got going at last Saturday’s all dayer. We will be playing out the campaign over the next couple of months. So if it has whetted your appetite why not join in? We need commanders for both Allies and Axis – you can play as many or as few battles as you like. Just bring down a late war 1500 point force – wander over to our campaign map and ask your CIC where he needs your troops most!
