Leave it at 12" gap, it's simpler. If it comes to it the attacker can have a unit move on from the long table edge rather than deploying it and then moving, so it should work out ok.

Ok as long as your happy with that - I suppose you could count it as "just have" moved onto the board. With the amount of space on one side I think that there should be plenty. It will be interesting to see where defenders mark on their reinforcement entrances. I will do a few small sheets A5 depicting the squares and each defender will have to mark on them where they would come on. This will be depicted facing away from the defender and he would have to mark it accordingly.

Quick question if one of the defending units breaks and flees which board edge does it flee to?
I may have missed it in the rules but I couln't see the answer.
If there isn't one might I suggest the bord edge from which the reinf(fleeing towards freindly troops)
Cheers

Ah a very interesting question and one which I didn't think about. I know its not Total War Rome but in that game they rally automatically when they get to the central plaza. I know we can't add this as the defenders have their fair share of little bonuses. I would say initially away from the attackers and go for nearest board edge from that point if they don't rally. However, there is a little question about panic. If one non-skirmishing unit runs or is decimated that could be curtains for the whole garrison if they fail their panic tests. I'm not sure if this is grossly unfair on the defenders as they have been placed so close together in a smallish space by the game default. I suppose by giving them an extra +1 on the leadership this may have helped to soften this blow. A point not metioned also is that if the attackers do capture or have control of the central plaza then this extra +1 leadership is lost as is the re-roll for break tests. Thanks again for the info - I was unaware of several things in the seige and conquest rules. Such as pursuers are still at half movement when pursuing as they pursue over the wall. I won't go through other things that are irrelevant to our particular scenario but please note that attackers needing a 7 to hit do so in the same manner as shooters with hitting on a six at minus one strength. If anybody does have the seige and conquest please note that all barricades / buildings are "improvised".

Warren there is no way you can require a 7+ to hit in close combat. The only way you get a 6+ to hit is over a defended obstacle, otherwise the worst it gets is 5+ and that's on a fairly unlikely (given the WAB stats) more than twice the weapon skill of the attacker.

Ah that is just for "prepared" barricades / battlements where there is a +2 to hit modifier. As we have only "improvised" barricades this rule is rather moot as its just a +1. Peasants with WS 2 attacking an elite unit of WS 5 would need a 5 to hit - with the prepared battlement modifier +2 that would be 7. So no need to worry on this one Stephen.

Eh, that rule actually makes fighting over a defended obstacle easier, rather than harder.
Why would fighting over a fence, wall or hedge be more difficult than an improvised barricade?

according to the Siege & Conquest supplementg- they are all improvised obstacles.
Pepared obstacles are things like fortress wall, pallisades with banks and ditches
