Having read the book a bit more I came across some very important rules.
Those of you with Imperial Roman forces may not like this at all - but its in the book and counts.
For the 1500pt games all Army battle standards count as 200pts if captured (not lost via shooting or fleeing) in combat. However, the Imperial Roman Army standard is in fact the eagle standard and has high status to it. If captured and held at the end of the game this is whopping 500pts to the opponent who captured it.
The likelihood of it happening under combat conditions should be quite low due to the superior forces that the Imperial Romans have in combat. However if your ASB is on horseback and gets caught this could be troublesome.
If it is captured so much emphasis on the Imperial Romans to get it back that all Roman units gain hatred to the unit that captured it. If it is recaptured one model is taken off the Roman unit that captured it. This depicts the Roman model quickly taking it back to the Roman camp.
Please note this does not effect Republican Romans. Be aware that Greek armies (oK mine) do not have an ASB or unit standards but rely on Oracles.
All normal unit standards are worth 100pts, the general is 100pts (although for the smaller skirmish games it is 50pts due to the lesser value of the general in such games).
However one thing that did strike me was the value for each quarter held which I thought was a little too extravagant. For each quarter held the book states 100pts each. This can only be held or contested by unit troops or chariots. Apparently no character models, war machines or elephants are allowed to do so. Although not here I was unsure about skirmishers and units under 5 models.
I will place a poll on here for all to think about how they wish to do table quarters in the games that request it.
The choices would be as in the book, lessening the points for each quarter or the highest number of quarters gets 100pts.
Another rule for the Imperial Romans concerning veteran or praetorian units is this. Once in the game these units may re-roll all of their hits (this means all). Let's say your veteran unit rolled
9 dice and got 5 ones, 3 two's and a six. You'd be correct in thinking this was pretty pants for an elite unit. So you have the option to re-roll them all - even the six that hit. Remember this can only be done once and all the second rolls count.
However if your ASB was captured and you were attacking the offending unit with hatred - you could only do this on the first set of dice. If you were still not happy then all the dice could be re-rolled. Hatred could not be added to this second lot of dice rolls.
To meld both of these points together - if one of your units has captured the Army battle Standard then they will become veteran status in the next round (for free). Those that are already veterans are expected to capture them anyway. However, if your veteran unit has been routed or broken - they will lose this ability. You must maintain at least 50% of your troops at the end of the game to still have veteran status. If not this is lost. Please read page 94 in the book for further details.
For both Roman armies don't forget your pilums on the first round and for Republicans don't forget to change over (manipular formation) which counts as you charging so double ranks for pila again!
Again everyone check over your unit stats and rules as mistakes cannot be rectified in game once the mistake has been realised too late. If you forget the -1 to shooting at phalanx or shieldwall, or forget to add the -1 for them being skirmishers etc... or if you are stubborn and forgot that you automatically pass your first break test, then this is plainly your fault.
