hi, i have been contacted by a couple of guys (one an ex member apparently called Robert Johnson) who say they are going to open a wargaming shop on high street south in Rushden.
they may well come along to a meeting in the next few weeks to chat to us about their plans and get some ideas and feedback etc

Hmm... Is there really enough interest in Rushden to be able to support two gaming shops? Admittedly, Osbourne's is also a toy store so it has something else to fall back on should this new store cut into its profits too much but it's still something to think about.
Also, for those few of us who don't live in Rushden, whereabouts is High Street South in relation to the Scout Hut and/or Osbourne's?

high street south is the main road that the road to the pemberton centre was off, the one with the now closed Oakley Arms pub
also, until this actually happens PLEASE can no-one mention anything to anyone at Osbornes.

If it is on High Street South, I dont think it'll do well, I've know quite a few businesses have failed that were located there, Would be better on the High Street

shops are probably cheaper to rent there and as they are a 'specialist' store they will get trade from dedicated customers just as wargames workshop did stuck out in cranford. if they are good enough they could do well.
they have said they will sell GW at lowere prices than osbornes but dont forget they will STILL have to compete with the likes of wayland for the big orders our club puts in.
could be good for us gamers as they also plan to stock other makes such as warlords etc and if we can buy at lower costs then thats great

While I agree that the rents are probably lower in that area, and I'm not wanting to put them off opening a store in Rushden, I dont think there are enough Gamers in the area that will frequent a store, I also dont recall if there is a store there suitable, ie with space for gaming tables.
There was an estate agents opposite Dominoes that may have been suitable but that may be in use.
There is no possibility of competing with Wayland, they would not be able to offer the Discounts, due to the overheads.
The idea is a good one, but not sure how viable in Rushden, you need more foot traffic. I think WGW decided to close the shop as it was not viable where it was, so they need to be careful. This is a slightly better location, as it is near the town centre, so they could do well if they advertize, and diversify to the right market (Possibly a gaming internet cafe?)

i heard that WGW's rent was a grand a month which is quite a lot and dont think rushden would be that high, but will see how they go.
they were also going to move to MK centre but that fell through and he decided to close his shop anyway.
i think they may get people from rushden, bedford and kettering now that green angel are closing down as well.

have heard that GW are closing down / restricting online distributors so wayland may not be able to give out massive discounts forever *sigh* Wayland have already put out a statement regarding these fears and published the following a while ago:
News about GW terms and prices. 2009/05/20 Just a quick heads up to those that might be interested. GW's recent announcement of their changing terms and conditions mean a few changes to online retailers like ourselves. Well actually they dont make alot of difference to us. While we won't use our site as a way of making comment generally on changing markets we will use this chance to express our opinion as many customers have asked what the impact will be on us. The answer is pretty much no impact on us, you might see prices rise a couple of percent but that will pretty much be it. We think the new conditions benefit professional retailers or etailers like ourselves that are willing to make the significant investments in their business plans. We are still fully committed to becoming the premiere place to buy games online. We do have lots of news to be announced in our latest newsletter (due in a few days ) so I will save all the juicy stuff for that. Thanks Wayland Games
As far as I am aware, Wayland are going to continue to offer their discounts and are not closing down. The only crackdown GW are doing, as far as I am aware, is to ensure that any internet retailers have a bricks and mortar shop and are not solely operating on the internet.

The way I understood it, and this seems to be backed up by the trade pack, its auction only sites that will be shut down. People with their own Url are fine

Whilst its always good news to see new business and gaming stores, the down side will be that Osbournes will see a drop in sales, and are likely to stop selling GW. (Mr.Osbourne is not a huge GW fan, its Tom that keeps it stocked).
Which is not a problem if the new store survives, but like a lot of people have said, I doubt there's enough trade in the Rushden area to support a store, unless they have some serious online support to boost sales. If it goes down, dont expect Osbourne to re-stock/give club discount again.
Just a thought, but lets wait and see...
