Hi all!
I've recently got back into wargaming as I've started finishing my first year of uni, and at one time I really wanted to have a go at building an army of 10th-12th century Byzantines - khataphraktoi charging across a field to squish some Bulgars/Hungarians/Turks just tickles a very specific historical bone. That said, apart from getting the WAB rulebook and the Armies of Antiquity, how should I actually get started? Is army composition vaguely similar to WFB, in that you start with a general and a few core units, and build out from there? Where can I find suitable figures in the right scale to use in the UK or online?
Is it worth looking at games that are still supported, like Clash of Empires, or is there no interest around the club for it?
Thanks!

Let me know when you'll be down the club and I'll bring along my copies of AOA2 and WAB 2.0 for you to look at
Cheers Simon

I've ordered twenty horse and fourty foot soldiers, most of whom will be used as skirmishers while I keep looking for a place that will sell suitable heavy infantry - is this about enough to start playing a few games with to become familiar with the rules, or should I still be looking and getting some more troops before starting?

I'll have to give it a miss this week - not feeling very well. Fingers crossed the army arrives by next week and we can have an intro game if you're not booked up?

Just an update - all my byzantines have arrived - there's enough cavalry and heavy infantry for a game, I think, plus some skirmishers I've still got to put together. If you're not busy with another game, and don't mind waiting for a few minutes while I sort out a list when I get down, do you fancy a game?

Managed to cobble together 1350 points - I know it's a slightly awkward number so if you want we can drop it down to the original 1200 or I can buff it up to 1500 with some more expensive gubbins.

If you're happy with the army you have stick to 1350 but if you feel like playing with the extras make it 1500.
At those point values we might be able to get two games in - so we could even try one at 1350 and a never at 1500 do you can see what difference the extra features make
