I now am the owner of three units of Legionaries since my auxillaries let me down repeatedly at Axis and Axes. However they are only 2 x 18 and 1 x15 will these be big enough for Hail Caesar?
Paul if you still have that box of spare auxillaries I might well take them your hands for a tenner if you like? That way I might be able to field a Hail Caesar auxillary division as well.

Hail Caesar runs on small, medium and large units. It does depend on how deep you go with the ranks. It seems that 16-20 models in two ranks is a standard size unit (frontage of 160-200mm). However 3 deep infantry needs 24-30 models for standard size unit (frontage 160-200mm). However I think Paul and Carl mentioned on another post about unit frontage that the Phoenix were adopting which may throw all above in the air. 12 to 15 models is quoted as a small unit size at 3 deep (80 -120mm frontage). I don't know if that helps at all.

Cheers Warren - Basically I now have enough units to field 2 divisions but they are on the small side as the formed units are 15-20 strong. However havong read the post it looks like infantry Romans should be in 18s So I will just add a few spare bases/models to the back rank when playing.
How deep do Cav need to be - 1 rank or 2?
How many war machines can make up a unit and can you mix types i.e. Scorpios with Onagers?

For cav a std size is 12-16 models (frontage of 160-200mm) and a large unit size is 8-10 models (300-400mm frontage) and this is a two deep battle line. Small cav units are 6-8 units(75-100mm frontage).
As for the war machines - std size is 2or 3 models (80-120mm frontage) , large is 4 (160- 240mm front), and small is 1 (40mm front) all in one deep battle line (obviously we can't have bolt throwers shooting comrades in the back of the head - can we?). Of note the deep battle line refers to light artillery. I don't think you can mix units as artillery comes under three different headings light, medium and heavy. However I'm happy to be corrected.

Why do ranks matter, as only warbands and phalanxes have a depth of 4 figures as standard. as a Romand player with 1st century AD, Caesarian and late romans I tend to field mine in ranks of two although based that they can be put in column although legionaires get a free move anyway.
Although of course if you want it to look historical you can go for 4 ranks deep.(24 figs) which is what i tend to do if i'm playing on a 6x4 table and then do a formation cvhange once I get into battle.
but remember that it really does not matter on the size of frontages (or the number of figures) as long as you know what the morale is of that unit, and your opponent is aware also, after all HC works on a morale basis and not a figure removal basis.
