Guys being the sad person I am I have been analysising the frontage recommendations for Hail Ceasar from the rule book and comparing to numerous issues. For example existing collections, commercial packagiong of units, cost and painting pressures, etc.
In the light of cost and painting pressure and also the concept of all players being "compatible" with their armies I have suggested a universal frontage as below.
I reckon the best frontage to adopt is 120mm as a standard. This accomodates 6 infantry frontage or 5 Cav (approx actually 125mm assuming 25mm frontage).
When you add the rank factors romans are 18 figures and warbands are 24, pike units 24, cav 10, etc.
Skirmishers are normally half units - effectively the same frontage as standard but a thin line to reflect spaced out skirmishers.
This is less than the 160mm to 20mm frontage the rule book will recommend which on average adds a further 33% figures to the size of units. i.e. romans go from 18 figs to 24.
This will be clearer when the rule book comes out but there is alot of info already available to inform hence this suggestion.

This is the only thing that turns me off HC is that i may have to buy more figures as my bases are all made up for WAB. this is particularly true for warbands or Phalanx where you need a depth of four figures and a minimum frontage of 8 figures. this means that for each unit I will have to find and paint and extra 8 figures and then redo the movement trays.
I was thinking of keeping 6 froontage as standard as per the Standard size rules.

at teh club we have 'adopted' pauls 120mm frontage suggestion so 6 wide inf and 5 wide cav are the norm, so need to rebase your wab stuff as i use my armies for both, and i have based new ones to suit both as well

Carl is right we use a 120mm frontage for foot and 125mm for cav, actually the trays are closer to 130mm / 135mm to provide for lips to keep the figures on. For small units the frontage we are experimenting with is 80mm not quite half but a four figure frontage - I felt three figure frontage just too small, also the combat factors are two thirds which kinda justifies the slighty wider frontage used for small units.
The key is two smll units can contact one standard and two standard units contact one large.
It works just fine ;D ;D ;D

Garth; HC is meant to be played with more units than WAB usually but this is because they played most of the games on 8 x 6 or bigger tables.
at our place, we do the usual 6 x 4 tables and therefore simply scaled it down and most of us use our 2000pt wab armies anyway just because it's easier.
we used to do some saturdays but at the mo its just tuesday evenings
