2011 Simon Freshwater-Sturgess Memorial Trophy
For those of you who may not know this annual competition is held in memory of a former Phoenix member Simon Freshwater-Sturgess who was tragically killed in a car accident.
This competition takes the format of a Warhammer League, the winner of which receiving the Simon Freshwater-Sturgess Memorial Trophy.
The rules for this year’s competition are as follows:
Army Construction
• Armies must be no more than 2,000 points. Armies must following the standard restrictions in the 8th Edition Warhammer rule book.
o Minimum of 500 points spent on Core Units
o Maximum of 500 points spent on Lords
o Maximum of 500 points spent on Heros
o Maximum of 1,000 points spent on Special Units
o Maximum of 500 points spent on Rare Units
o No more than 3 of any one Special Unit may be fielded
o No more than 2 of any one Rare Unit may be fielded
o Army must contain a minimum of 3 units, and at least one character
o All armies must contain at least one banner (This is to prevent the army from breaking at the start of the game in the Blood and Glory Scenario)
(The latest High Elf Errata document specifies how their army selection may differ from the above)
• Only armies using Currently Published GW Armies Books will be allowed. (If you are unsure if your army qualifies please ask me and I will give you a ruling).
• All armies must be painted to a basic standard. This is deliberately somewhat vague. As a rule of thumb if your figures are not bare plastic/metal or only undercoated, then chances are pretty good that they’ll count as painted. If anyone has any doubts please come and ask me.
• All players entering the Simon Freshwater-Sturgess Memorial Trophy must submit an army list to me by 14th of December.
• Army Lists will then be checked by or on the night of the AGM (21st December).
• The first League games can start being played from the first club meeting in 2011.
Competition format
• Depending on the number of entries the competition will be split into equally sized divisions.
• Each player will play one game of Warhammer against each other member of their division.
• The intention is to play a variety of the standard scenarios during this league (how many of the 6 will be played depends on the number of entries received), as playing several different scenarios will encourage more balanced army building.
Therefore the games in each division will be divided up into a series of rounds, with a different scenario being used in each round. Who plays who in which round will be determined by random draw at the start of the league. In this way people can still play their games in any order, but who you are playing will determine which round the game is, and therefore which scenario is played.
An example may help illustrate how this will work.
Say we have the following players in a division. Stephen, Darrell, Warren, Carl
Round One (Scenario: Battleline)
Games: Stephen vs Darrell, Warren vs Carl
Round Two (Scenario: Battle for the Pass)
Games : Darrel vs Warren, Stephen vs Carl
Round Three (Scenario: Blood and Glory)
Games: Darrel vs Carl, Warren vs Stephen
So when Darrel plays Warren they will play Battle for the Pass, when Darrell plays Stephen they will play Battleline, and so on.
• The top two players at the end of all the games progressing on to knock-out quarter-finals or semi-finals (Depending on number of divisions).
• The winner of each division will play the runner up in another division, with the winners progressing to the next knockout round until only one player remains.
Games
• Each game will be played using the rules for the scenario that is being used. This includes the victory conditions if you happen to be playing a scenario that does not use straight victory points.
• Calculate Victory points are per the Warhammer Rule Book, even in games where the victory condition is not victory points, as these will be used as a tie breaker if two or more players end up with the same number of tournament points.
• The Mysterious Terrain rules will be being used for this league.
• The Quarter-Finals/Semi-finals and the Final the will be played using the Battleline Scenario.
Additionally the following modification to the standard scenario rules will be in effect.
If the victory point difference between the two players would indicate a draw then an additional turn should be played, recalculating the points at the end to see if either player has achieved victory. Players should continue to play additional turns in this manner until one side or other is the victor.
Competition Scoring
Points will be awarded as follows for the results of each game:
• Draw – VP Difference 100 Points or less (3 Points to each player)
• Minor Victory – VP Difference 101 to 400 Points (4 points to the winner, 2 points to the loser)
• Solid Victory – VP Difference more than 400 Points (5 points to the winner, 1 point to the loser)
• Massacre - VP Difference more than 400 Points and Winners VPs more than Double Losers VPs (6 points to the winner, 0 points to the loser)
• Any concessions by any player will count as a Massacre result.
In scenarios which have their own victory conditions (Blood and Glory, The Watchtower) the following procedure will apply.
Calculate VP difference as above to determine the winning margin. But if the VP difference in favour of the games winner is 100 points or less (so ordinarily this would count as a Draw or even a Loss) then instead the winner will gain a Minor Victory.
So for example if a during a Blood and Glory scenario you break your opponents army, but when you add up the victory points you have scored 800 points to your opponents 1,300, this will give you a Minor Victory (even though on VPs alone your Opponent should have got a Major Victory).
The VPs for each game should also be recorded, as these will be used to determine the finishing position in the case of a tie on points.
