I enjoyed watching the game on tuesday between Carl and Paul but unfortunately it cost me £50!! That is the cost of a Battalle or however you spell it from Warlord. (via ebay)
I also dug out my existing collection of old Foundry lead, reckon I can do 1,000 points of say Royalists with them alone - but unfortunately they are still metal colour. Hopefully soon to be temporarily based on 20mm card and undercosted ready to paint.
This lead to me reading the rules - sad but true.
I would appreciate clarifications on the following:-
1) Only the front rank of musket fire, but you can move a rank forward after firing to represent "extroduction", do you play this rule?
2) Only enough gunpowder to fire four times - I note the game length is 6 turns and considering initial movement do you play this rule?
3) How bad are raw infantry??? At face value they talke a fear test if charged by any formed troops and have a lower WS and LD factor, is there any thing else I should be aware of?
4) are there any rules additional to the ECW book played or any in the book specifically not played.
cheers
Paul

1). Units of shot can fire "Swedish" or "Salvo" fire, which allows you to fire in two ranks. But this uses two shots worth of powder, and leaves the unit completely unloaded at the end of the turn, meaning you can't then fire in the following turn (as everyone in the unit is then reloading. The main plus of this, apart from the additional shots, is that a unit that has a Salvo fired at it must take a panic test even if you don't cause enough casualties to normally require one.
If your unit of shot is on a hill it can automatically shoot in two ranks (and is not counted as firing a Salvo) as rear ranks can see to shoot over front ranks. But this also counts as using two lots of powder.
I'm not sure if we're using the Extroduction rule or not. From memory I believe the way that works in the rule book is you can shift one rank forward and not count as having moved.
2) Yes we are playing the limited powder supplies rule. I don't remember at present whether the Rennaisance army lists we're using have the options to buy additional powder supplies for units.
3) Raw infantry aren't that bad as such. The main pluses are that they're cheap, so you can have more, and as far as the units of shot go, they're not actually any worse at shooting, just more likely to run away.
Raw Pike are less helpful as they fear any formed enemy infantry they don't outnumber 2 to 1, and the lower WS also hurts them. But the lower leadership isn't a big thing provided you keep your army general close by so they can use his leadership.
4)
Can't think of anything that we're specifically not using from the main ECW rules, appart from the actual army lists, where we're using a set of more standardised Renaissance lists instead.

actually, we are NOT playing the limited powder rule in this campaign, the reasons are twofold;
1. it is very difficult to keep track of during some games as not everyone has units based in singles so markers or dice have to be used and can get confusing if using one for casualties and one for powder. Paul's units are nearly all based up as fours so he has to mark with dice for losses.
2. as the starting force is only 1000pts and does not get you much, then buying extra ammo takes points away from the amount you could use on an already limited game total
it was for these reasons i decided NOT to have the limited ammo rule, plus some of the people in the campaign have not played these ecw rules before so i thought it unfair to stick this in on top of them learning the game mechanics as well
also, we are NOT using the extroduction rule

i will try and get you a copy of the army roster lists and points totals for tuesday.
if you are def up to join the campaign then i will add you too the table and onto the map.
good to have another royalist player, but you can play anyone to be honest, and its better if we all play each other anyway so we get a good variety of games.
if you have any other questions, just ask me on here or on tuesday.
if you PM me your email address i will also email you the main rules etc i have put up for this

Carl my email address is on my profile, I cannot find yours
I now have 45 pike 150 musket, 32 mounted plus some gun crew and two generals ready for undercoat (first thing tomorrow morning) so good progress, now for the painting.
Great excuse to get these guys out of the cupboard. Did not know I had so much stuff hidden away.
Thats without counting the recent Battalle purchase which I expect any day now oops perhaps I did not need to buy it???.

Just got myself a Scottish Covenanteers force whilst at Derby from the Warlord boys having been hooked when they visited you guys. Bought the rules ages ago but not read them yet. You talk of revised army lists....where do I find them please? Cheers Nobby

Nobby ask Carl for the Warhammer Renissance lists and rules which we are using - thats what he means by revised as they are a revision of the WECW rules set by GW. Hope thats helps.
