Well, now the hurly-burly's done, now the battle's lost and done, we find ourselves with little to do except plan for next year's Games Day. I've heard that some people are interested in doing two boards again, like we did this year, but I've also heard that some other people would be interested in doing a single, massive board. I feel that both ideas have merit, and that it ought to be discussed as a group rather than having a decision made by only one or two individuals. Having thought about it a little, I've come up with the following list of reasons why each idea is good, and I'd love it if people would add more ideas on and discuss. Benefits of a single table- Would allow us to do a massive centrepiece, like the Black Pyramid table or the Ork Dirigible, potentially giving us a chance to win the best table award,
- Would potentially be able to allow more players to play than on the two individual tables.
Benefits of two, smaller, tables- More than one gaming system can be played, so we needn't limit ourselves to just 40k (for example) thus potentially limiting our volunteer base,
- Easier to keep an eye on models (particularly after the theft of Warren's Troll at this Games Day just gone),
- Less of a need to have two massive armies identically painted (which could be taxing for any of the members of the club).
The other idea, that I had, was that we could take two tables and link them. So things happening on one table could affect those on another. Taking a leaf out of White Dwarf, they published an Apocalypse scenario several months ago, where Basilisks on one table could shoot at the enemies on another table, whilst being actively defended against a small group of teleporting troops. The major issue I see with that is that the two tables wouldn't necessarily be adjacent, which could lead to problems. Does anyone else have any ideas on what we could do for next year?

if we do a space marine based 40k game we needn't necessarilly have to have them all painted the same as there could be several 'chapters' involved maybe against nids as Nathan has quite a few as does David, and Warren is looking to start them as well.
what ya think?

A Space Marine Crusade army could well be an idea, allowing multiple Space Marine players to donate portions of their army towards the effort.
As for 'Nids, the problem is that they could also do with being the same colour scheme.
Perhaps an idea would be to use a historical scenario where multiple armies fought together on each side against one another. The Horus Heresy, the First Black Crusade (heck any Black Crusade would work), the Age of Apostasy and the first battle for Armageddon are all examples of where this could work.
I think the first thing we need to do is decide on whether or not we want to do one table or two, and we need to work out just how big the table/s will be. Once we've worked this out, THEN we can allocate gaming systems, scenarios and armies to the table/s.

any scenarios pre heresy would mean re- painting some chapters

Again it would be best to use figures that have been painted already - as with this year Kelmarsh does take its toll on the time needed. I would love to see a 4way again as that worked very well at Gamesday at allowed at least 4 people to play their own army. I remembered the dragon egg scenario we did at Nottingham - that worked a treat. I'm thinking of something similar unless someone has other ideas for fantasy.

Ideas for gamesday;
1. we could use the warlords stuff and put on an ancients game. this could be good as its in a different area of the event than we normally are and a different period. we could also add on some of the members stuff. i know that James is collecting their romans and Steve is doing Celts
2. 40k.. we could do a huge Space Marine v Ork battle as lots of members have Marines and several have Orks, namely Steve, Jon, David and Darren.
3. fantasy.. take your pick really.
the other option is that we hire the scout hut ourselves on that Sunday and put on our own small event with maybe Tom as a trader and get Gladiators involved as well. for a few quid each we could have the hut all day (perhaps they would let us set up tables the day before) and it is also not as far to go as Birmingham.
this means that more members could get involved including those under 16 who are obviously not allowed to man tables at gamesday, but they could run their own game if they wanted at our own event.
we could then have flames of war, confrontation, AT43, Napoleonics and any other periods we like as it would be our own event and not GW led.
personally i would rather do something ourselves, as we will have all the ACW, boer war and wings of war stuff as well.
it wont be huge but we could fit in quite a few different games and would be great fun i think, and used as a pre-cursor to us doing a larger event perhaps in 2010.
we could also let the public in for say a quid each to help cover costs.
what do others think??

Just a note aboput Gamesday and the idea of using the Warlords stuff etc. They were actually there in a seperate section to the main hall this year. It seems that this may not be in their interest to have two similar games side by side as undoubtedly they will be ther again in 2009.
I like the idea of doing our event but what would we do for refreshments as visitors would expect to buy at least a coffee, tea, pop, crisps, biscuits? However this does pose its own little logistical niche - serving, someone with a Cash and Carry card, rubbish and the inevitable mess in the main hall. I would rope off an area or not allow punters in the hall with food, perhaps allocate an area by the hatch or even upstairs so that it can be contained. What do the scouts do - is there any leaway to open the back doors to the garden etc...?

all we say to everyone, i.e. members, traders, visiting clubs is bring your own food and drink and be prepared to take rubbish away with you. as for public, then i think we DON'T sell food and drink as this means someone has to be in the kitchen all the time unless we get a volunteer who is willing to do just this. if we hold late summer we should be ok to open the doors etc as people cant get out that way and have to come back through the hall to exit. they could use this for eating and drinking etc, depending on weather.
as for gamesday i'm sure that there will be more than just warlords running ancients games, and the more free publicity for their models the better.
personally, if they go i think they will be using their new ECW range with the warhammer ecw rules as this again is free advertising

guys; we have received the Gamesday proposal form for this year from Gw, and warren has it.
However, both he, and Steve said last night that they would NOT be going this year, so we have some options to consider.
1. someone else takes over the proposal and runs it from start to finish and sorts out what they want to put forward and then if it is accepted, controls the event on the clubs behalf as in previous years. this is more involved than people think and should only be taken on if you have the time and inclination to do it to the standards set previously.
2. we forget about doing gamesday this year and we run a one or two day event ourselves, either at the scout hq or a.n.other venue. whilst i am not willing to organise the gamesday scenarios as i too will not be going, i am willing to organise or to help organise our own event. this could be in the form of a mini 'from the ashes', where we run a few large games and a tournament (battlefront want a local flames of war tournie hosting) or we get bedford and a couple of other clubs down to play some matches and get a trader or two in to run a stall.
3. someone does gamesday, and we also do our own thing as well.
what do other members think?
i do have an alternative venue we can use which is much bigger than ours, and is NOT the pemberton centre.
cheers guys

I, for one, want to do Games Day and would be willing to 'control the event on the club's behalf' as stated in your post if we get enough interest (i.e. volunteers).
